I'm not sure that I can put this on here but admins please remove it if it's not appropriate!

A couple of days ago I felt a cold coming on :thud:, a friend said 'you need to go to the chemist & get some Vicks first defence'. slightly apprehensive I pop into boots & buy a bottle, I have to say it's brilliant my cold has gone!
It's really easy to use its a nasal spray (can be used by asthmatics), you use it four times a day as soon as you get the first signs of a cold, then for two days after the symptoms of your cold have gone!
I think it was about £8.50 from memory but in my personal opinion worth every penny! :dbgrtmb:

I agree, I used it about 10 years ago, stopped the cold dead in it's tracks and I've not had one since  Kept the bottle for years, would have used it again but never needed to....

Oh, oh, hope the industry isn't reading this or it'll be medical experiments for me again :yikes:

Thanks for the tip, will look out for that as I'm always getting colds. Got my traditional Xmas/NY snot factory on the go at the mo, hope the last few hours mucking about in the cold sunny garden will kill it off.

I thought that first defence stuff was useless if you already had symptoms when you use it?

I find smoking is good for treating colds. There is compelling evidence that smoking could kill me. Well if it can kill something as big as me, what chance have germs got?

Jests aside though, I seemed to escape this year's colds. I wonder if it's a coincidence that this year, for the first time in my life, I took nutrition seriously, and made sure I was getting enough protein and vitamins.

I make sure i wash my hands when i get in dumping all the germs down the drain. Try not no use hand rails / door handles when out and about and eat plenty satsumas in winter.
If a cold tries to creep up on me a couple doses of paracetamol knocks it on the head and i havent had a proper cold/flu in years (touch wood)

Don't think I've had a cold for a couple of years now (says he tempting fate). No idea why, but here's a few suggestions.

              • Get old. As you get older you develop immunity to some of the cold viruses.
              • Avoid people. I'm not a great fan of social gatherings anyway, many's the time I've been told "you're not really a people person are you?" You can only catch colds from other people, so best avoid them. :th scifD36:
              • Cut down on alchohol. I was never a great drinker anyway, and it tended to give me a bad case of verbal diarrhoea, so I more or less gave it up. Haven't had a cold since.
              • Stay outside. That's easy for me, I'm a full time gardener so my work keeps me outside in the fresh air all day. By contrast Mrs Trunky, who works in a school, comes into constant contact with hordes of snotty, germ carrying sprogs all day. Consequently she gets loads of colds. So my advice is stay outside and avoid snotty kids. Hope this helps.

There has been a right nasty one doing the rounds around here - we all had it over Christmas and New Year, and it is a real slow burner, but also heavy with it.

After taking the Vicks defence I never got a cold I just had a really horrid cough which lasted almost 3 weeks! (I've not coughed for 3days!). Maybe a trip to the chemist is needed! Wrap up warm tomorrow my friend :blue thumb:

I rarely get colds, but I find there is a much higher chance when my feet get cold.
If I do feel like something is coming on, I take a 500mg Paracetamol before I go to bed on the day I first become aware, and when I wake up, I am normally fine :blue thumb:

Rarely get a cold. I contribute that to washing my hands a lot, and never putting my fingers in my mouth. And never eating any loose items other fingers have touched.
Now the next thing is going to sound really crazy, but for me it works 9 times out of 10. If I do feel something coming on . I look my self in the mirror and yell at it, "I do not have time for you" and it goes away. really. And I do not believe in those Flu shots. Had one about 15 years ago, felt so under the weather for 4 months, so not a gain.

I'm another advocate of hand washing. I carry antibacterial hand wash in my bag too.

I use a spray of covonia throat spray at the end of the day if people around me have been lurgied up.

I still have the remnants of this cold, been weeks, so fed up with having intermittent cloggy head and froggy throat despite honey and lemon and all sorts of home remedies. Might have to put myself down ...:psnp::heehee:
