Lovely pictures Kamchow. :) Sadly I can't grow either of those plants in my garden.

thanks for liking the photos everyone.

sheal: i'm not an expert at growing anything.
i just bought the plant and stuck it into the ground! ha ha
AFAIK my garden soil is heavy clay-ish. and that part of the garden does get water logged after heavy rainfall. luckily, the acer and the other plants survive despite my ineptitude!

bigbore: the acer is sort of in partial sun.
it has a clear area around it, so the sun hits it a bit. but the fence and other plants block direct sunlight as well.

a couple of streets away, someone placed their acer (red leaf variety) in their driveway. it does get direct sunlight hitting it for long periods of the day. but it doesn't seem to be affected by that. it is a mature plant and looks stunning.

so, i'm unsure whether the plant really needs to be protected from direct sunlight.

I have a fairly large red Acer Palmatum in the front garden in full sun, it is wind more than sun that can cause damage (leaf scorch).
I have Acer Orange Dream and Sango Kaku in the back garden in sun for most of the day, the only thing they suffer from every Spring, as the leaves emerge, are Aphid infestations.

stronglylodon, thanks for the info about acers.

by the way, how tall is your sango kaku? a 20' monster or are you growing it in a pot?
