The problem is there is NOWHERE that they can be released in the wild in China so all living Pandas will spend all their lives in Zoos somewhere (ie Edinburgh) or 'sanctuaries' in China just making money from 'Panda Tourism'. Cute they definitely are but I wonder whether this is preservation for profit.

They are all very cute, even soft toy cuddly. Did not like the way they were displayed on what looked like a butchers block. They should have been with Mums all the time.

              Agree with strongylodon.

Panda mums are notoriously bad at 'being mum' and often reject or ignore their offspring so they have to be artificially nursed.

Strongy, I rarely if ever disagree with you ... but ... I would rather see them living in 'controlled' environments than not at all to be honest. It may be 'tourism' but that is what will keep them alive and not a dying species, like so many other beautiful creatures we are losing in the wild, often at the hands of humans.

Steve, they can't be with their 'mums' as they were IVF babies so to speak so the 'mums' are not interested, hence the 'breeding programme'. Sad, but it's true and they will be looked after with exceptional care and attention, more so than if they were with their 'mums'.

It's a difficult one but on balance I think I'd rather they existed in a sanctuary or zoo as long as they are well cared for rather than become extinct.

ETA Must have been typing so didn't see your reply Victoria and I couldn't agree more.

We have just got back home from our holiday in Scotland and one place we wanted to visit as we were going to be in the area was Edinburgh Zoo.We were very lucky to see Tian Tian no less than eight times in the 8 1/2 hours we were in the zoo.:love30: We only had to pay the entrance fee to the zoo which we bought on line in advance so the panda viewing was free:hapydancsmil:

I must admit they all do look rather cuddly when they are small:biggrin:
