We all know (and are preached at often enough about) that fruit and fruit juices are an essential part of a good diet - however, how much of a good thing would be a bad thing?

For example, I am having a thirsty day today, and over the course of the past three hours I have drank a litre of fresh orange juice (the not for concentrate, pure squeezed oranges type) - is this bad for me?

I know that too many bananas are bad for you, because of the high potassium levels, but are there any others where too much of a good thing is actually bad?

I think it is a case of everything in moderation, I remember Jeremy Vine telling about when he became hooked on making 'smoothies' in the blender and during the course of a day he had liquidised and drunk the whole contents of the fruit bowl!!! He said he was ill for a week!!!!:ouch1:

I drank a litre of Tomato juice, didn't feel to good after that.

NEVER neck a Soya milk drink, the plaster of paris in it sucks the moisture out of your cheeks.

Juices are a refined, processed foodstuff and as such, should be partaken of in moderation. It might take 15 oranges to make a litre of juice - would you be able to sit down and eat 15 oranges in one sitting? Probably not. So you might be having concentrated vitamins, (and is that really necessary if you are eating a decent diet) but also concentrations of undesirable stuff like acids and sugars, unmitigated by a good helping of fibre.

Processed juices are implicated in excess sugar consumption and are documented as a cause of erosion to tooth enamel. If you are thirsty I'd recommend having it with loads of ice or mixed 50-50 with chilled water.

I'm not sure how they have been marketed as a health food, probably by the same people that market margarine. It's a brilliant way to turn a good profit out of low grade fruit that might have to be binned otherwise. Or am i just being cynical?

I had a friend who had severe problems with his teeth as a result of drinking juice at a level of a litre a day or more over a period of some years, (to put it into perspective) he was ordered to quit by his dentist.

Admittedly, its not something I would do every day - generally, I will drink water/tea/coffee/diluting juice in far smaller quantities; best of it is, I didn't really notice that I had drank so much until I was pouring the last glass and twigged that I had only cracked the seal on it today.

That got me to wondering if there was anything that would still be classed as good for you if taken in largeish quantity?

Mahdahlia is right :blue thumb:. Take them in moderation.

Fruit juices are high in sugars and it doesn't matter that they're 'natural' sugars! They're still sugar and too much is bad for you.

Other things to be aware of (particularly if you make your own juices):- too much juice from carrots and the other orange veggies can stress your body from an overabundance of carotenoids and turn your skin yellow (not related to jaundice).

Too much of some green veggies juiced can give you too much vitamin K. for most people that won't cause much problem - maybe some tingling in the extremities (no comments please:heehee:) but people on anti-coagulants should be very careful.

Don't forget that the body needs fats to help absorb some vitamins so something like a slice of buttered toast after having some juices (if you're not having them with meals) can be helpful to the absorbtion. You've got some fruit, vitamins, fats and carbohydrates there :)

I cracked the seal of some Laphroaig at lunchtime, and just found out it is empty :-)

I feel good, though I am unsure if it was good for me generally as it is the third this week

As for fresh orange juice, I would book the small room for a few hours early morning ish

When I test my blood sugar (several times a day) I always find that any fruit, except a small of berries, will cause horrendous blood sugar levels. I no longer eat fruit, except the berries, or drink fruit juice. Root veg will also raise my blood sugar but not as much.

                    Thanks all :)

I'm now wondering if it was one of those things where your body is trying to tell you something? I thought that yesterdays sniffles were purely hayfever related, however overnight I got a bit of a sore throat, so I am wondering if I am fighting off a cold, and the sudden desire for a load of orange juice was my body telling me it wanted vitamin C?

Just saw something on a prog about ancient Greece. Get a cup and make fire in it, when the fire goes out, put it on your bare skin, the air in the cup will shrink, causing your skin to get sucked up into it, along with your blood.

Your body then says, "Hang on a minute, we're short of white blood cells:yikes:" So starts making loads more, which then fight the infection :paladin:

Don't think I will go as far as that (I can just imagine Mrs C's face if I was setting a fire inside a mug!), but it goes some way to proving that the body knows what it needs to fight off an infection or illness.

Aside from the niggly throat, I don't really feel that bad, so I am wondering if the vitamin C has helped keep it at bay. Either way, I don't think I have had any ill effects from the orange.
