Can you get achy sore knees without it signifying something nasty?

No. If they hurt for a prolonged period, rather than a burst of pain from temporary strain, you're looking at nasty, longlasting mobility issues. Might be corrected with surgery. Do you want to go there?

Be nice to your body. Yes, keep it active but don't abuse it. Even young athletes end up suffering consequences later in life because they pushed beyond reasonable limits.

I keep very active but I would never take up jogging/running because it is not age appropriate for my knees or hips.

    Pain is your warning signal.

    Please listen to it.

Thanks. I guess I'm stuffed then. I've taken an immediate step back from training as soon as my knees first gave me bother. I was hoping I'd simply overworked some muscle or other and rest would cure it. I guess I'm ready for the knackers yard.

Achy during exercise? After exercise? Any time? Is there any inflammation or does it feel warm to the touch?
My right knee occasionally suffers swelling and heat build up. It becomes stiff and there is a pain in use. Ibuprofen addresses it quickly and effectively. To be honest I now feel it coming on and pop Ibuprofen for a couple of days and it is sorted without it really affecting me beyond the initial warning symptoms. This is the knee that I broke the pantela on when I was a kid.

        "DON'T PANIC"
If you were a runner I would suggest checking your shoes and switching to running on softer surfaces, for a few weeks to see if that helped. Not really much use for martial arts. Try and reduce the impact on the knees when exercising, so reduce jumping and stamping and weight bearing on one leg only; if practical. Losing weight; if you have any excess will reduce the load on the knees. You could also look into strapping to support the knees during training. You could try taking 1 ibruprofen about an hour before training and seeing if the pain is less several hours after training. I ran for years on 1 ibruprofen before each race.

Both my knees are shot, had them both operated on and still no good.
I had cartilage removed from both, last op should have been only 30 mins I was on the table for 90 mins ther was that much in the knee socket. If I'm kneeling down now in the garden weeding I have a pair of builders pants with knee pads in, does help.
My right knee gets warm and red I just take a couple of Idruprofen.
The quack said the last time I had the knee op it was through wearing out the knee joint, and to many impacts on the knee joint. I used to play rugby when younger then a plumbing and heating engineer then being in the Paras.
I dont run has much now, and if I do its on grass not tarmac and a good pair of trainers with cushion in soles.
I think I'm ready for the knackers yard.

Me too! Apart from ankles - so far. :old:

@clueless1 you need to get it looked at and X-rays done. It may be something simple or the fact that you've overdone the martial arts.

Many years ago a couple of my customers who were orthopaedic surgeons said that they were being kept in the lifestyle they had always wanted to be in by joggers and sport enthusiasts that kept overdoing things.

Try taking some cod liver oil capsules - they help with my achy knees. Might be a placebo effect - but as long as it is perceived to make a difference then it's worth a try.:snorky:

You have my sympathy Clueless. Osteoarthritis in both my knees. Six years ago I had total knee replacement in my right knee; it's a painful operation with a long recovery time but the new bionic knee is wonderful now and a huge success. I don't run and if I have to kneel on it I use a cushion or kneepads. The bad news is the left knee is a candidate for replacement........... but only when it gets really bad. Good luck.

They do help but they are not a cure.

                    Thanks all.

I do take cod liver oil daily.

There is no visible swelling or inflammation in my knees, and to be honest they're not really painful, just sore and achy. But they click, which is a recent feature for me.

My right foot has arthritis in the big toe joint. And more recently I've walloped my right ankle. So I think I've been subconsciously altering my gait to reduce load on my right foot. That could seriously mess with the force distribution through my knees I guess.

I have an appointment with the gp to discuss all this next week, and I'm also ' in the system' with the podiatrist to see if my foot needs anything doing to it. I'm just really panicking because Dr Google paints a very bleak outlook.
