I purchased a bamboo recently, when I got it home I noticed sooty deposits on some on the leaves in the mid section of the plant, its about 7ft tall. The deposits dont brush or rub off and I cant see any creepy crawlies about and the plant seems ok...any advice?

Sounds like sooty mould, Nut. It grows on honeydew secreted by sap sucking insects. Not usually harmful, just unsightly and it persists long after the insects have gone.

A neighbour gave me some bamboo canes from his garden and they've all got sooty mould. You can scrub the worst off with a bit of washing up liquid but if it's been there a long time, you won't shift it all.

Flinty, sooty mould will rub off, Nut says hers doesn`t. Ergo, NOT sooty mould.
