I only have one Bamboo , a dwarf Rufa that grows just over two feet and looks lovely by the pebble pool . Its now in its second year , but after winter it always looks a bit tatty , the leaves have lost their colour and are brown at the end . Last year as it was growing I kept cutting the brown tipped leaf stems away and it soon looked a million dollars ! As boo is a grass would it be easier to cut it back to the ground in early April , and let it grow fresh new stems ? Or is my first trimming method better? In area its only as big as a dinner plate and is not spreading.

    TIA

Bamboos can look a bit tatty over winter.
I would just leave it for the time being.
It could possibly shed some of the dried leaves, and there will be fresh growth as the weather warms up.

Btw, my Fargesia rufa (which I have had for close on 10 years) is approaching 6ft, which is it's max size. Although they don't spread by runner, Fargesias will form a nice clump.
