I have about eight house's that I garden|in one cul-de-sac, and they had the fortune or (mis) depends on how you look at it, of all having their brand new gardens all fully lanscaped when they moved into their brand new homes, only problem is some bright spark planted several sorts of bamboo in nearly every garden and the roots are playing havoc with all the patios and paving, is there any way of controlling the roots without killing the plant not possible to put barriers into the ground as lots of the gardens neighbours to the sides and the backs have bamboo also so not always customers bamboo doing the damage
they all like their bamboo but dont like the root problems any one else dealt with this situation
    ??????

G S most bamboos are difficult to control I bought one supposed to small and slow growing ended up ditching it, the best way to grow them is in a container you could try putting a physical barrier into the ground(sink some old paving slabs edge on)but you have a job on your hands.

I think the current advice is to check when you buy bamboo that it is a clump forming species and not a runner, and as you say walnut if in doubt plant in a container, but it is far too late for these gardens as they are all so established and are running riot in almost every garden, even if I removed the offending plant in customers garden neighbours both sides and to the rear also have bamboo its in every garden its like a plague of the triffids.
The plants themselves look very attractive its the runners that are doing the damage.
