I have a black bamboo, that is growing nicely, probably nearly 4 feet tall. I had a space in the far side of the garden so had a pull on one of the stems of the black bamboo and lo and behold a stem with loads of root, so I have planted in the space. Ok, maybe technically I may not have done this correctly but what i am wondering is, should i cut that stem down a bit until it has had a chance to root properly and give it a chance to toughen up a bit, rather than just let this one stem grow really tall, (obviously thats if it continues to grow at all after what i did).

Sounds like you did fine - as bamboos shoot from the base - I'd just leave it as it, ensuring that your firmed the soil round it good and hard with your foot. The only problem would be if we got strong winds - which would rock the roots loose - I don't see any in the forecast.

I agree with Fran, I would leave it and pot up in a sheltered spot, you lucky thing I was looking at the black bamboo in Dobbies garden centre yesterday and they cost a fortune £75 for a five foot plant, need to save up a bit me thinks! Good luck!

I bought it on e bay for about 10 pounds, from one of the garden centres, it was only about a foot high but with plenty of shoots, i have been really pleased with how well it has grown, the best bet is to keep looking and find a day when not many are bidding.
