From April/May D&D. Get a good sized bucket with a fitted lid. Put in 2 pints of chicken pellets and fill with water. Next day open it up and give it a good stir, breathe deep ahhh !

Put in a couple of pints to your watering can and water the base of the stems. I use this on my beds too, it is a great liquid feed. I just keep topping up the bucket with pellets and water until the end of the year. If you find there is a build up of sediment (ash mainly) just tip it out on a bed and start again.

If you do use it on the beds make sure you water the soil, as I am not sure if the strength will burn delicate foliage. If you do splash, I usually just spray the bed lightly after.

As for how often, I do my Bananas weekly, beds when I remember, but always in april and as the roses come on. Also the gunneras get a body builders diet of chicken pellets !!! :D

If you pay the P&P I have loads of offspring, none of your ebay rubbish either. I don't want anything for the plant but the postage might be £4-5 ?

I will unwrap them next month and take a pic of the offspring. Is this too late for your plans ?

BM, have you sent bananas through the post before, only I was just wondering how much foliage it would be possible to remove without causing any real damage and still having a growerble viable plant.
I reckon that all foliage could be removed and as long as there is a largish root system it would grow away OK.
Perhaps just a stem and some roots? [IMG]

I had a couple of banana plants sent me through the post last year by a garden center, no leaves on them just the roots and a bit of a stump.they are growing perfectly well.

I haven't but I wouldn't think twice about doing it. I think the stems would be fine as long as they were sent 'in growth' then potted up and cared for well the other end. Depending on size you could fold the last leaf in half and leave it on. My flowering banana last year did most of its flowering with half a leaf due to the height and getting the lid of the banana house on. At least with one whole/partial leaf on you know it can feed and breathe. Either way I think 'in growth' they would be fine.

Most of my pups have a long stem before they have much root, at least two to three feet before the first leaf.
I reckon that as long as the bulbous base is in tact, then the plant will grow away OK.
Just as Fancy says, but I agree it must be in the growing season, which is not really all that early, May or June at the earliest I think.
    What do you say?

If they are awakening stems with no leaves then End of May early June to be sure. They weigh quite a bit mate, P&P wise.

I had a sneaky peak today. If the weather stays mild I would think last weekend in March to remove and send ASAP after. :D

These are on the outside of the gunnera patch.
