My banana musa basjoo has a number of pups this year, some are just over 40/50cm tall.

When is the best time to remove them for potting.

    Now, Autumn or Spring ?

Personally I would do it soon and only if the pups can be removed with some roots.
Its often surprising how big they have to be for that to happen 50 cm is not very big.

Is there a reason you need to separate at all? You've obviously got a healthy mother plant. Why dig down and start butchering?

I think a banana left to it's own devices will look a lot better when you've got multiple points of interest as opposed to the single pseudo stem.

A bonus of that strategy is that if the winter cold kills some of it off, you've always got a chance that some of the others may survive.

I've just sliced off a pup which is smaller than that. It had a few roots on and has been potted up in the greenhouse until next year.

I've been growing musas for years now and still find them fascinating I've even had one of them produce 'fruit' . when it comes to pups I tend to leave them until their 1-2 feet then with the aid of a hose pipe and a sharp knife I water around the pup enough to get my hand deep enough down in the soil to find the umbilical root from the mother and cut the pup out from there.
