Banned ... but good!

For some reason we got into a long discussion today concerning the many excellent products which are now banned for safety reasons. My mum and dad were never without Dabitoff (not the aftershave, Davidoff ), an excellent little bottle of dry cleaning fluid with a padded top which you could rub over small stains. It never failed to work. Then there was Doom, a potent moth repellent (Ziggy's away, so I can mention moths) which actually worked, unlike most of the 'natural' remedies out there. We grew up with these and many more 'harmful' products around the house and they never seemed to do us any harm.

Are they any other old-fashioned products, now binned under Health and Safety, which GC members miss?

 

Wasn't Dabitoff just White Spirit, which is widely available?

 

Don't think so, Strongy. I think it was trichloroethylene, which is now verboten.

 

2,4-D Never did me any harm!!

 

'Tric' was really good stuff. I used it to clean my bike chain & gears in my youth, but wasn't silly enough to use it to degrease my hands and get dermatitis from it. Nobody sniffed it because there were loads of other drugs readily available. Wasn't that the stuff that was used in Tippex?

 

Try degreaser Scrungee,... it smells nice:D

Can you buy Brazil nuts anywhere in the shell?
Not seen any for a couple of years.

Moth balls !
I have a ton of very fine knitwear and it needs mothballs to keep the little critters away, a couple of years ago i was told that the good old fashioned mothballs that our mothers and grandmothers used to use have been deemed as chemically unsuitable
These were a great product that are now substituted by poor substitutes, i've tried them and they're useless

 

Saw some in Tesco on Saturday, they were displayed near the fresh produce, fruits if i remember rightly.

 

Does any one use loose tea these days

Not that brand but i use loose/leaf tea
