bare root hibiscus & deutzia still dormant after 1 month?

Soaked roots, planted on Feb 12, but no sign of life yet. I've never experienced this with bare root dormant plants before.

 

Still quite early in the season
Are there green buds?
If you make a small scratch on the bark, is there green underneath?

If yes to both, I wouldn't worry at this stage.
They are probably putting down roots first and will leaf up when it gets warmer

 

No green buds at all. Will check for green under the surface and report back later...

 

Not sure about Deutzia but Hibiscus are always about the last deciduous shrubs to come into leaf, so there's no panic yet....

 

Ok the deutzia was green under first scratch with no effort. However the hibiscus was white underneath, with maybe the slightest hint of green (maybe not though as it's against dark red-ish 'bark'!) so I scratched deeper but no green and seemed quite dry.

 

Ok so maybe I have the two mixed up. I think the deutzia is the red barked one and hibiscus the light wood colour one (didn't label them)?! Either way, is it looking like one is dead?

 

My Deutzia stems looks slightly red/brown if that helps and still no sign of life but it's early days yet

 

If there is green/ whitish green (not brown and brittle), they are fine.
It's very early in the season still. They should get going once it warms up a bit.

 

Still nothing from the deutzia and hibiscus. So disappointed about the hibiscus especially. Pulled them both today. The hibiscus is green under the surface so I've threw it in a small pot and shoved it in the corner to see if anything happens! Replaced with dahlia tubers, nice big red ones, can't remember the name right now....

Ahhh c3k, you shouldn't have pulled them yet! I haven't got Deutzia but I have Hibiscus and as Noisette has said they are one of the last plants to bud up, they are very slow. As you are further north than me I reckon it could be another three weeks or so before you see leaf buds.

My hibiscus is only now starting to show any sign of coming into leaf, and this is its second year! As a bare-root plant, I would expect it to be a little slower, as it first has to get some fine fibrous roots going, before turning to leaf-growing.
My deutzia are now showing a good amount of leaf, but they are a few years old now, even my "little" cutting. I bought the first plant as a bare-root, and it was slow to show leaf.

 

Ah, seems I've been a bit hasty then! I'm just a bit impatient. But I honestly thought everything would be showing buds by now. I will learn. Maybe it will survive the transplant?

 

Bottom left, the standard bare shrub on a bare stem, hibiscus only showing tiny new shoots now and I its a lot warmer here with me than you up in Scotland.
