Staying away this week so I just thought i'd share this lovely building with you all. I came here in 1977 and went round an antiques market here. I assume its still held here. Remincent of a Cathedral inside. The architecture is echoed opposite in a row of small permanent shops, fishmongers, grocers, bakers etc. Lovely
Thats it Scrunge Just getting used to the Street names around here, keep nervously looking over my shoulder when walking down "Bear Street"
I will find out over the coming week John. Got a bit more work down here next week I still have the meddalion i bought here in 1977 and some pen nibs still in the packet.
Good news you have work Ziggy. According to this: http://www.northdevon.gov.uk/index/...markets/nonlgcl_barnstaple_pannier_market.htm "It is Open all year round from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm, there really is something for everyone on every day of the week, except Sundays and bank holidays" From your photo it looks like it has recently been tarted up, maybe it's about to reopen.
Hi Ziggy glad to see you are working. Magnificent building in great condition. What is a pannier market ? Is it where the local farmers sold their produce on market days ? I've only ever been to Barnstaple hospital A and E after running into a glass door I did not see ( the door won )
Now you mention it John, I think there was still some scaffold on the roof at the back so you are probably right. Certainly nothing but kids with skateboards in it this week. [hr] Been a good week at work & more to come. There is another Pannier market in Tavistock, i'm guessing its origin is in the Panniers you would strap to your Donkey to stick your leeks in Ouch Harry, you were lucky, Barnstaple A&E had the worst survival rate in the UK a few years back. We were too scared to have an accident when we were working on Arlington Court up there. Glad you liked the pics Penny, will have another look around next week.
I've been to the Tavistock market, that was packed with lots of small traders - it was a similar nice old purpose built Victorian building IIRC.
Hi Ziggy, My sister and her hubby moved down to Devon five years ago and she visits Barnie to do her shopping every week and loves the Pannier Market as it is under cover :D Looking at the photos reminds me looking at all the different entances where carriages would drive through,as i can just imagine horses being housed in each section a bit like stabling.Mr Kandy says that Panniers are things that hang off the sides of horses where goods would be stored but we are probably both wrong. :D Lovely photos by the way and the architecture is beautiful :D Hope you are enjoying the area PS,I just Googled and found out this info about the place... http://www.barnstaplepanniermarket.co.uk/history.asp
