    Hi,

I have just bought a camera that needs high performance AA batteries.
I am thinking of getting rechargable ones

What is better. Lithium or NiMH?
    Thanks

I've got a set of Sanyo eneloop which I think are NiMH for my camera. I carry a set of Lithium (non-rechargeable) as backup as they have a very long life.

I bought the highest mAH (or whatever the designation is) for mine. They seemed to last for ages, and in all the years I owned the camera I only ever owned two sets (one-on, one-off) so they didn't seem to deteriorate - and I took tens of thousands of photos in that time - albeit probably a less power-hungry camera than one might buy today. (My current camera has a proprietary battery which I hate. I have a spare, but if I run them both flat I can't just stuff some emergency AA's in instead :( )

Also good for cold conditions which is why I carry same for use in headtorch in freezing temps. Can be rather inconvenient if rechargables suddenly expire on a cold mountain in winter.

Lithium Ion tend to give the best performance both in terms of capacity and longevity, however not all devices are happy to have them as a power source, so check carefully.

Nickel Metal-Hydride are essentially the same as the older Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries, however they generally have higher capacities and do not suffer from the 'memory effect' as readily as the NiCad do - however, being more closely related the two are generally interchangeable.
