I've got a small bay bush in a container which is getting plenty of fresh growth. The problem is that, a soon as the leaves begin to darken in colour they also go brown. Is there a nasty in the pot? Can I do anything about it, or should I just give up and get a new bush?

It's situated on a north-east facing terrace, but is pretty sheltered.

Bay leaves are often seared by cold winds in the spring. Is the plant pot bound? Short of water? Over watered? They are pretty trouble free as regards pests, but sometimes get scale insects that make the leaves sticky. That doesn't sound like your problem so don't spray it. Try moving the container to a more sheltered position out of cold winds - after all, they are from the Mediterranean

Thanks for the reply, Hornbeam. I shouldn't think it's pot-bound as it was only potted on last November. The leaves aren't sticky at all and I can't see any evidence of bugs. Bit difficult to judge whether it's over or under-watered. I poke below the surface before watering usually, to feel if the soil is damp or not. Might be too windy, so I'll try moving it on to a lower level and keep my fingers crossed.

    Thanks again!

It will be the wind then. As regards watering, remember it's from the Mediterranean so prefers it on the dry and sunny side.

I'll try not to give too much water, but that's not easy when it's bucketing down outside! Thanks again.
