I rooted a bay cutting a few years back, a semi ripe shoot with about 4-6 leaves...took a long time to root though

You should be able to take a a heeled cutting it you have some new growth starting but it may be worth waiting a bit. A heeled cutting is a new growth stem that has grown this year usually with just a a couple of leaves plus the tip leaves - gently peel it back from the main stem so you end up with a tail at the end of the stem. Plant in pot 50/50 compost and vermiculite - water, cover with a plastic bag, and put in a cool not too sunny spot close to the house. Ensure that it is kept slightly moist - but otherwise neglect until you see either signs of new growth or root from the base of the pot.
