I received a bay tree in a pot for a birthday present last year (May). It did very well all year and was very healthy and a beautiful shape - until the snow came. Now a lot of the leaves are brown and brittle but some are still healthy. Should I remove the damaged leaves and hope for the best or is there something specific I should do?

    Hi,

I have bay trees but due to my very very lucky positioning of surrounding plants, and the fact that I brought the two in pots into the greenhouse they have remained unscathed.

I would remove the ruined foliage and hope for the best.

They are borderline hardy and I think with this last winter they have all taken a knock. Hopefully it will bounce back.

Hi Texas, sounds like it is frost affecting your tree, but don’t panic. The leaves are likely to turn brown and wither. If only some of the leaves are affected, remove them in spring and give the tree a good feed... It is hardy to –7C but if temperatures fall below that the tree should be covered with horticultural fleece or taken indoors until the weather changes. . Best of luck.. :thumb:

I think I should have covered the tree with fleece - looks like it's badly frost damaged. I've removed all the damaged leaves today and, frankly, there's not much left!! I'll leave it a week or two and see if anything happens but I suspect it's too late. What do you suggest I feed a bay tree?

We've a bay tree about 4'6"' high in the garden and some of the tips got frosted but most of it is OK, I'll just trim the frosted bits in a few weeks time.
As for feeding all it gets is either an occasional dose of phostrogen or home-brew comfrey liquid. One in a pot would probably need more feeding, but ours started as a rooted cutting in a pot and didn't get much feeding and has done pretty well.
