This is an extract from an article in the Amateur Gardening Magazine, which I thought might be of interest, regarding Broad Bean trials at the RHS:

"It is the favourite crop of gardeners, [and blackfly], so help is now available to pick the best Broad Bean varieties.

The Royal Horticultural Society trialled 37 cultivars at it's Wisley and Harlow Carr gardens, dishing out seven new Awards of Garden Merit [AGM] in the process. AGMs are the preserve of plants of "excellent garden worthiness". They must thrive in all conditions, be readily available, and be reasonably resistant to pest and diseases.

RHS Director of Horticulture, Jim Gardiner, said Broad Beans were currently a popular crop. "Blackfly can be a problem, but plant seeds early usually gives plants a head start and so reduces the effect. Jim said the Vegetable Trials Assessment Panel had chosen some "splendid varieties" as below:

    Dreadnoght [T&M]
    Giant Exhibition [D T Brown]
    Monica [Mr Fothergills]
    Peria [Mr Fothergills]
    Scabiola Verde [S E Marshalls]
    Suprifin [Mr Fothergills]
    Robin Hood [Pro-Veg Seeds]"

    Now you know!!

Well, they did try 37 different varieties, lolimac, but only handed out awards to those mentioned, I'm afraid. Having said that there's a lot of good varieties out there without an RHS award but get sown because gardeners like them.:snork:
