pots are best, cos less disturbance, 3 1/2" , just push em under surface of compost, i . m sure they ll be ok, well, check instructions on packet too

Use loo rolls or fibre pots to sow them in and then just plant them out loo roll or fibre pot and all = NIL root disturbance.

I never set runner beans before the 12th of May.
I set them in pots in the greenhouse, by the time they are ready to set outside the frosts are finished.

I have to grow beans in tubs because i dont have space anywhere in the ground i have added Levingtons manure with out of a bag with compost do you think they will be okay in tubs snd thanks for the other tips. I have put them in 3 inch pots in the greenhouse and sown them on end after reading your replies i suppose you could put the loo rolls in a tub not to disturb the roots.

Your beans should be fine in tubs. Just take care that they don't become too dry. If the weather is dry when they are flowering, spraying the blooms with water in the early morning and evening will aid pollination.
