Beastie Houses

Just reading chkm8's post about wildlife gardening... so, all these little boxes you can buy for twenty quid online, to attract bees, lacewings and the like, do they have to be a certain size/depth/diameter? Is there a specific wood certain insects prefer? Etc etc etc...
What I'm asking is how easy is it to make your own?

I don't think sizes are critical as long as the homes are dry and sheltered!
Most of these are directed at kids so can't be that complicated.

I have now converted OH's home-made birdbox into flats as it was never used by anyone except spiders! It's now nicely filled with bamboo and awaits its new tenants - if any!
I could get into this housing development lark!!

 

Oh dear, where will the poor spiders go? You'll have to put some little cardbpoard boxes down for the homeless... :D

 

Nah - they'll just come indoors!!!!!! :eek:
