Beer

I thought about hijacking the 'wine' thread then thought better of it.

I'm teetotal and so is my other half - usually, but once in a blue moon he fancies a beer or to be more specific a stout. He usually drinks Guinness or Murphy's but does anyone know of a Scottish brew he could try please....... @Fat Controller you immediately come to mind.

 

I used to enjoy an 80/- beer I think it was, I forget the name of the brand, on a couple of visits to the Edinburgh Fringe, back in the day.
I try to restrict my alcohol intake, I do this by not keeping wine or beer in the house. But I do have some for medicinal purposes in our tea-house, they are essential when working in the garden on a hot day and saves my wife from having to make me cups of tea.
I keep them in this little Budweiser fridge I bought second hand on eBay several years ago. I made a little stand on castors for it. So in the summer, I can roll it out and have it next to my chair on the verandah.

However they are available in an emergency at other times, but it would need to be a serious one, if I had to go down there in the rain to get one.

 

@Sheal If he likes Guinness or Murphys, then I would suggest Belhaven Scottish Stout. They have it on sale here, and its rather nice. If a bit potent at 7%.

 

Thanks Sandy. I can see by the time Mr S has worked his way through recommendations he'll have gone from teetotal to alcoholic.

 

Yes it is quite potent. I found it in a social club I was in for a do last year. It was the only thing they had other than lager and cider. I was twisted come the end. Good fun had though (not the next morning )

Beer of that strength is very typical here. It does tend to catch a lot of visitors, especially British ones out. They try drink the same amount as they would at home, and cant understand the reason they cant walk after three or so.

I've been drinking this german beer lately...



...its one that very few British will drink. The reason is just about possible to see in the photo.

 

Ohh a dark wheat beer? Interesting!

Had to laugh in agreement with the beer strength overseas. When hubby first moved to Belgium, and I used to fly out to join him occasionally, he was forever saying "Belgian beer = half-speed!". We drink abbey beers (Belgian pils is not allowed over the threshold), so they start at 6%, and we have a number of beers at 11% - that's wine strength!!

 

@Sian in Belgium there are far darker wheat beers than that one. Nice tasting as well.

 

It's just that most of the Belgian ones are white, and cloudy. I love wheat beers!!

 

That dark wheat beer sounds amazing! I had a few dunkel-weiss in Germany (is that what they are called?) and absolutely loved them along with the Rauchbier (which is amazing - smoky flavoured beer!). So so good!

 

@Sian in Belgium do they not have the "krystallweiss" in Belgium?

Wheat beer is a good reason to travel to Germany... If you ever get down to a place called Freiburg in the south, they have a very nice wheat beer called Feierling. Only available in that town.

 

I'm easily pleased but I do like Innis and Gunn.
