beetroot in containers?

    Evening all, I would like to grow some beets for pickling, when should I be planting also, I have some 4ftx9" planters, would these be suitable?
    Not sure what sort of depth I would need.

    Good question boots. I bought some Boltardy yesterday, would be interested to see whether I can start them off under cover now...packet says March.

    Thanks for that Terrier, handy site you mentioned I will keep it bookmarked.
    I think I will try a few in a planter and the main lot in a raised bed, plenty of depth in there.
