Beetroot ... which is better "Solist" or "Monika"

    Hi

    I am going to try making up some seed tapes using beetroot. However, since most beetroot 'seeds' will produce several seedlings, any benefit from the tape regarding thinning would be lost.

    I understand some beetroot are classed as monogerm, which produce only one seedling per seed (wow !!)

    Two of these are Solist and Monika. So which one is better please ? (in terms of taste and / or weight of harvest)

    There is another monogerm variety, called Monorubra, but they long 'carrot shaped' and I think I would prefer the more conventional globe shaped beet.

    Hi Williebee

    I always use Boltardy, but I station sow mine one seed to a cell. Then when big enough I transplant them. This then gets away from having to thin out and I have never had one seed produce several seedlings this way.

    beetroot yuk horrible. i'd rather pull my teeth out one by one than eat that stuff.

    Really ????

    Beetroot is nice, as a pickle ... sliced and put on top of a meal, or grated and added to a salad

        Me too. I raise them in a small seed tray, and prick out to 9cm pots (3 to a pot, then some time after planting out I take 2 of them as thinnings), thus the issue of Monogerm / not doesn't really arise :)

        I've always grown Boltardy and direct sown....for some strange reason i've never had much success transplanting them:dunno:

        If they grow in a cluster they tend to push one another aside so the fact that some are supposed to only produce one plant per seed seems a bit pointless.
        Mostly grown boltardy for years, occasionally detroit, but trying yellow cylindrical this year.

        Hoping to avoid the next day scare, in the toilet.:biggrin:

          Let me guess....you don't like beetroot then :biggrin:

          I only eat it with BarBq food...Radish is another good one as well.

          Most food revulsions span from childhood when as children we where forced to eat things that for one reason or another, we did not want to.

          Other food revulsions come from allergies, and the rest (to my mind) come from poor preparation/cooking/presentation.

          As an ex-chef I have converted peoples food revulsions many times by good prep/cooking and/or presentation. You'll have heard or read this that people eat with their eyes and if it looks nice it will probably taste just as good.

          Of course, there are always one or two people who are different and will just say no, its disgusting and will never ever try it again. This is just a closed mind, and I had that for the first half of my life too with certain food but now eat them regularly.

          Keep your teeth nijinski, we'll keep the beetroot.

            hi steve, i know what mean, ihad gone certain foods as child and couldn't understand why when i grew up. but beetrroot is not one of them. by the way i've still got my teeth. regards nijinski

              Oh god TV chefs, they will do anything to try and sound different.

              IMO, beetroot has a very subtle flavour, I cant imagine it even being detectable amongst that load of ingredients , maybe for colour only.

              Its basically a chocolate cake with beetroot, to make it look like some thing different.
