    Hi people. So, I have a good few Beetroot at about the right size. Pulled a few samples earlier, but what now? What do I do with them? Would like to get them to taste like they do out of the jars from the supermarket! Ha ha. Any advise on perpetration from pulling to eating would be appreciated. Cheers.

    I boiled and pickled mine yum !

    Wash them and cut off the green leaves and then boil. The skin just wipes off afterwards. If you cut into the beets before boiling they will bleed into the water which doesn't affect the taste.

    Surely the idea of growing your own is so they DONT taste like the ones from the supermarket.
    If you want pickled beetroot you might as well just buy it.

    I just pull them, screw the tops off, and boil, then rub off the skins and eat while still warm if possible.
    Really nice with a salad.

    I always think pickling beetroot ruins the real flavour.

      I just eat my beetroot raw it seems a shame not to its so lovely

      Or i peel and cut into chunks and then put them in a saucepan with some oil for 20mins and they slightyl caramalise on the edges and keep their crisp in the middle

      screw the tops off and boil them till soft ,then rub the skins off and eat still warm or let them cool and freeze ,defrost and slice you can add vinegar to taste but you don't need to pickle it in jars to save over winter :thumbsup:

        hummm, not sure what you mean by "taste like out of the jars in the store"
        Anyway, I love to roast mine, scrub them up, clean off the tops, cut them in half, put the cut side on a little olive oil and roast them. I have also grated them raw for salads, love them that way.
        And I have also simmered one cut up tiny in water, for a future baking product I do with the red water----and that is to make Red Velvet Cake from it, instead of using man made red food coloring, which is not good for you. And the cake does not taste like beets at all.

        By the way the pretty spiral colored beets, I would never roast, but only save for raw in a salad, so pretty.

        Honestly, I was only jesting about supermarket ones to get a reaction. The last two posts were really what I needed as to ideas to prepare them. I didn't know about rubbing the skins and wondered if they needed peeling. ( no really!) this will all be relayed to the missus as I'm useless in the kitchen, apart from washing up and cleaning. Ho hum! Cheers people.

        your in luck. just so happen to have two raw ones in the fridge. took a look to remind myself . I would just use a veggie brush to brush them, to brush off any possible soil, and do that under cold water. tidy up the stem area with a knife and your good to go. I would not peel them.

          and by the way, there is a old fashioned rule of thumb. Veggies grown under ground get started in cold water. veggies grown above ground are dropped into boiling water
