    Hi
My beetroots, seem to be pushing themselves out of the ground (see pic) is this normal? They're not due for harvest until mid July IMG_20210622_202911.jpg

That's how they grow, so perfectly normal.

They actually look like a long variety.

BTW I would start to harvest when they begin to reach a nice size regardless of what it said on the seed packet.
Don't let them get too big.

Thanks both. Yes all veg trial and error this year! I've actually eaten a couple which were OK but they are an odd shape but a small variety so maybe I'll harvest now. Thank you x

Just as an aside, Beetroot was originally grown as a leaf vegetable not for it’s root. The leaves are pretty much the same a Swiss Chard I personally don’t like it but my husband does. Braised with a bit of garlic they are nice if you like Chard.

We also eat beet leaves raw in salads, finely sliced in a vinaigrette, although the above leaves look a bit tatty.

In addition to the tradditional red rooted ones, been growing these for a few years now (cheap ones from Wilko, not expensive seeds from T&M as image link).

What a great pic! Wonderful colours. Unfortunately it's only me that likes beetroot in our house but I like the idea of using the whole plant. I try to use a lot of stalks and leaves that would usually be thrown away. I think we waste too much in this country so a little bit of creativity we could all be a bit more resourceful. Have a good day folks and enjoy your fruits
