I've come up with an idea. My back garden doesn't get that much sunshine, because next door's oversized tree blocks the morning sun, the house casts a shadow over some of the garden until the afternoon, and then next door the other way casts a shadow last thing in the evening.

So I have an idea. It will actually make little difference but might look quite good. While I'm off work, I have a plan. In 10 minutes I will set off to collect the lad from school, as usual (while I'm off work). Then we will race home, have a light lunch, then straight out for supplies.

I think we'll make a big sun. Maybe cut the shape out of ply, stick it on a stake, and use gold coloured foil for the sun part. Then stick it up somewhere in the garden to reflect sunshine in.

id get next door to do something about the tree. we have same problem with a huge tree not too far from our boundry, that blocks the sun for 2 hours or so. its not all bad though we just sit in opposite side of the garden.

Good idea clueless, I've often wondered about covering the fence with a reflective material, it wouldn't look very nice but might be OK around my veg patch. Your sun idea would be good to disguise your neighbour's trees too.

I haven't got the heart to ask the neighbour to do anything drastic with the tree. In the old lady's lifetime, she has seen many kids grow up, and many of those kids used to climb the tree. Wife has become friends with a lady who lived in our house as a child, and she's told us that the old boy next door (now deceased) had at one time secured some ladders to the tree just so the local kids could safely get into it to play.

In autumn, I will ask if I can give the tree a trim, but nothing drastic.

The sun will probably go on the opposite side to the tree, outside of the morning shadow so as to reflect some morning sun back in.
