After about 3 years, the string that came with my cheapo strimmer finally ran out, so I bought more. Only instead of buying the correct thickness, I bought one meant for much more beefy strimmers than my little 300W thing.

Its made a big difference, but a slightly scary one. The strimmer is now a bit brutal. Whereas before, if it met too much resistance, the string would just bend out the way or snap, now it doesn't. Now the strimmer actually kicks a bit. Just now a couple of times I was glad I was wearing my safety shoes, as the strimmer kicked and tried to strimmer my foot:) Had I have been wearing ordinary trainers or worse, sandals, it could have been unpleasant:)

Doesn't sound as half as bad as those who advocate using wire shark trace, etc. in strimmers to give them a bit more bite. Mine takes 3mm nylon and that's good enough for most stuff before changing to a brushcutter blade.

I've just bought one on ebay, thanks for the tip. I'll get out the steel reinforced leggings.

Who invented the word "strimmer" BTW?

Probably one of our American buddies. It is short for string trimmer.
