    Hello,

I must confess to not being a garderner, but a friend of mine is just about to buy his first home with his new wife and he has been jabbering about starting a small vegetable garden. He has never had a garden as far as i know but he has always had palnts around his flat and is really enthusiastic and i want him to have the best start. So can any one recommend a good book for a complete beginner?? Something that is detailed with out being patronising? (he's a bit on the sensitive side)

Thank you foe all your help with this

A good one for me was "A Gardeners Guide to Vegetables" edited by John Negus ISBN 1-85391-699-4. Seemed to cover most aspects quite well - bearing in mind that I am not a veggie gardener :D .

Don't know if this will be of much use but I found Monty Don's book "The Weekend Gardener" quite helpful when we first got a house with a garden as it tells you what you should be doing month by month. It covers just about all aspects of gardening though there isn't a lot about veg in it. However I assume your friend will have parts of his garden that won't be given over to vegetables and that he may inherit plants from the previous owners that he may need help with eg. when and how to prune etc.
