During our recent visit to Beijing we visited a couple of the city's gardens.

    Beijing Garden of World's Flowers

This was built in 2005 and covers about 42 hectares with 7 inter connected greenhouses and 15 scheme gardens. Due to the cold winter there was little to see outdoors so we concentrated on the greenhouses where there was plenty of interest.

Nematanthus, nicknamed kangaroo flower, goldfish flower .... Is definitely a very cute plant.

I love ornamental plants but I'm more passionate when it comes to edibles. Here are some from the vegetable and tropical greenhouses.

        Some serious hydroponic planting

lucuma nervosa - eggfruit, it is said it has the flavour of maple and sweet potatoes and rich in vitamin B

Solanum mammosum - though the Chinese name for it is 'Five Fingered augergine' (many more interesting names are given to this plant around the world), it is actually poisonous but can be used as an ornamental decoration due to the fruits lasting a long time.

                Beijing Botanical Garden

This was built in 1955 on 400 hectares of land against the hills in northwest of Beijing. (Photo "borrowed" from Wikipedia since it was rather hazy on our recent visit as well as being rather brown and bare in the middle of winter.)
                image.jpg

In spring it is one of the most gorgeous places to visit in Beijing. This is a photo we took in April a few years ago. In addition to the scene in this photo there are magnolias and cherry blossoms all through the garden and on the hills inside its boundary.
                image.jpg

But in the depth of winter, again the main colour was in the greenhouses. The labling here was not so good so quite a few things I don't know their precise name.

                Orchid of some sort??

                Name?
                image.jpg

I like this one. It looks a little bit like a daffodil but has broader leaves. It was very scented.

Looks rather like a Nerium oleander with double flowers.

That is Eucharis, probably E.amazonica or E.x grandiflora.

                      More stunning photos HsuH.

I believe your 'flamboyant orange vine' is a Pyrostegia venusta which are in all their glory here at the moment ... I must get one!

I agree with longk on the double Nerium Oleander ... I have two identical about 4 meters tall each and they smell heavenly in the warm sunshine.

Thanks for sharing your visits and homeland.

Thanks @longk and @Victoria for attaching some names. Now I can keep my eyes out for some Eucharis :) P. venusta is very nice but too big a plant for me to keep one unfortunately.

Oleander, that is the name I was trying to remember, instead my poor old brain kept getting stuck at 'Ola.......' :old:
