    Hi

I am a new gardener and have planted a small berberis plant as per attached photo. T The garden is north facing and the berberis is on the the east side so gets sun as it sinks. This is London so clay soil (I think). The Berberis is dying and I have no idea why. Any help gratefully appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum Matthew

Just wondering what your soil is like, it looks very stoney, did you dig a hole and add some compost. Add any fertiliser?

I dont think its dying, it appears to have some good new growth.
It just looks a bit woody at the base.

Doesn't sound like a good position.

The plant came in a pot and I planted straight into the ground with the earth from the plot. The earth is two years old when we had the garden landscaped to replace plconcrete patio. I have ordered some John innes no2 and also erichaceous compost for some other plants - would either of these work for the Berberis?
    Other things I could do?

Does the label say anything more than Berberis; as there are a lot of different ones.
    When did you plant it?
Like Pete I don't think it's dying, given the strong growths at the top of the picture. I'd be inclined to remove the dead growths.

I think I would just tidy up the obvious dead bits and leave until next year, so long as where it is doesn't get waterlogged it should be fine.
Being deciduous the leaves will fall off over winter and with any luck the bare patches should fill out next spring when it starts into growth.

Ok so does 'tidy up' mean cut back the stems with no leaves?

I'd cut back the stems with the the dead leaves still on them.
