Salvia guaranatica "Black and Blue" is a favourite of mine there are a number of other named varieties of it as well.
Salvia atrocyanea is a good blue grows more upright than S guaranatica.
Both have been outside in my garden for the past 5 -6 years. S guaranitca took a beating in December, but is still alive although not flowering, S atrocyanea dies off every winter, but comes back about now, in fact I came across the first shoots yeterday evening.

I want Salvia Atrocyanea this year :fingers crossed: . I've had/have black and blue its a bit of a sulky for me its a bit shy on flowering. Black and broom is similar . Salvia Uliginosa is a real nice sky blue .

This is S.Uligniosa at Rhs Bridgewater they quite a lot there . Can't remember if mine flopped or not

            thanks All

I sort of want the height and growth of amistad , but a light blue .. I have the "blue suede shoes" which arrived last week as plugs all potted up and in the greenhouse .

I have never really bothered with perennial salvias but I bought the hot lips series and amazingly they survived the winter so worthy of a grow plus I am missing late bloomers in the garden so I appreciate what you have suggested.

Blue Suede Shoes is brilliant and quiet tall. I had mine in pots which I placed in amongst red salvias. Because they were in pots they were easier to bring indoors as not hardy here. Come through Winter and given me some cuttings to grow on this year.
The other Blue variety is Blue Butterfly which I treated the same as the one above. Some nice cuttings growing on the plants in the old heated conservatory but not taken yet!
Patens species are quite tall and hardy.
Curiously I've got Blue Suede Shoes and Blue Butterfly from the Raven womans site not a premier Salvia site, real bouncing plants they were!!! The really tall variety (saw it at Wisley a couple of years ago over 6' and traditionally at the back of a bed! Can't remember the name, sorry!!

              Hi all

thanks for the replies I bought some blue salvia seeds off ebay so all planted out and a light covering with perlite as I read they need light to germinate ... had about 90% germination rate success.. so they are now in the greenhouse out of coming out the heated propagator.

I took cuttings from the blue suede shoes plants I have already doubled the number now and they root so easily in a glass water on the windowsill. I covered the glass with water with cling film and made tine cuts so the cuttings just had the stem in the water and the leaves kept dry

Don't know what others think but I'm aware that there are blue flowered salvias VERY like Patens but under other names. Now I collect my Patens' seeds and resow them. Almost 100% they come true to type which is what I want (though it would be great to have a RED patens!!!) I wonder if some of these 'newer' patens-like blue salvias are odd self setters under a new name? I'm not complaining cos bringing on new varieties is what the horticultural trade is about I suppose!?!?

Lovely plant (got it!) BUT not a RED PATENS. The White version is nice but limited here unfortunately. Cambridge Blue a really lovely plant almost as large as Patens (the blue is an Oxford blue) It's only half hardy with me but does come well from seed! Easy from cuttings! Used to grow Patens and Cambridge Blue in pots together, very effective!!!
