While I've been off work, I've figured out how come wife is (usually) thin as a pin despite eating at least as much as me. Its because of housework. Its harder than gardening. I've just spent an hour scrubbing the bathroom. I have to do the kitchen next.

In time, I'll go back to work, and slowly forget again that housework is work, and poor wife will have 10 times as much work on her hands as me and she wont complain, and I'll whinge about my hard 8 hour day in front of a computer or the hard 45 minute scenic drive home, but she wont whinge about getting bleach in her eye or having to be a contortionist to scrub behind the bog.

I want to make life easier. I'll let wife poke me with a stick to do some more work, but also I think it must be easier. What's the best cleaning products (consumables and equipment) to make life easy please?

Best thing we have got is the steam mop. No chemicals, uses just water and the floors are dry in about 10 minutes. we do all our laminate, varnished floor boards and lino with no problems.

at least as far as I am concerned I find that doing house chores as you go/cleaning as soon as possible spillages etc takes all together less energy and a lot less work.
To kill bacterias light malt vinegar works very well (rinse after to remove smell) and as far as chemical products are concerned "cif bath mousse" lemon scent is also not bad.
I am also a fan of steam cleaners but problem with those is that they get easily blocked by limescale.

We've recently bought the Karcher steam cleaner. Eliminates the need for chemicals as the steam kills off most germs, can get and clean anywhere its great! From the carpet to the bathroom tiles.
I also clean the windows with it then hoover up the water with the Karcher window cleaner.

How funny! We were having this conversation at Doggy School at the weekend.

The conclusion on best products vs price/economy:

~ for a good all rounder (as it can be used as washing up liquid), "Stardrops"
~ "Soda Crystals" is great for cleaning grease/greasy stains, unblocking scummy plug holes and a multitude of other things. Except, they are not "crystals" anymore, its now powder.
~ white vinegar is another product which can be used for cleaning windows/sinks/tiles etc (diluted!)

Try Aldi's antibacterial sprays, and bathroom and kitchen sprays just as good as dettol but much cheaper.

I like the steam mop idea. I didn't know you could get such things.

You obviously don't watch daytime TV lol. Things like steam mops are always advertised! The Karcher does this though and much more.

Daytime TV for me consists of Mr Bloom, Tree Fu Tom, I Can Cook (with the the very lovely Katie), Nina and the Neurons (with the even more lovely Nina), and various other CBeebies wares.

If you were near you could try my Karcher. I was sceptical but it really is as good as they say! :)
