I had a practical test at the end of a course this year and I was asked "when is best to lay turf" and I answered "Spring and Autumn" - is this right?

I am also laying my brothers garden with turf and I wondered when is the best time - I have read that it should be the end of Aug or Oct but I think this is dependent on where in the UK you are - I am in edinburgh.

Thanks to anyone who knows in advance.

I would say August - September when the weather is a bit cooler and damper.

When I lived at home on the family farm we did all the reseeding of the grass fields in spring or autumn so I would say you are spot on with your answers.

I did some patching in a large old lawn last Autumn. I used turf from a border I cut from the same lawn. The turf is soft and springy and has been laid on a peat base. The patched parts looked pretty miserable all winter but now you can't even find them. [IMG]
