I use a strimmer upside down on these type of edges .

Lawn edging shears are what I use @NoviceGardener2023. I have also created a narrow gap of about four inches between my lawn and paving using a spade which makes it easier to edge the lawn. I just clean the gap or gutter out after trimming the grass either with a long handled fork, by hand or using a dreaded vacuum, depending how lazy I feel!

Mine gets a lot worse than that, I go along with a half moon lawn edger but only once a year.

Thanks, any pics of your edging, trying to envisage it, 4 inches gap sounds big in my head.

I tried to edge it a bit with a spade, but for some reason parts of the edge on the grass beside the pavers are rock hard, nearly like cement underneath the soil.

Guessing they are laid on a cement mix base and it has come out to the side of the slabs when they were laid.

The gap can be whatever you prefer, a couple of inches would be fine just to give you room for edging shears or a strimmer. This is the gap between my lawn and sandstone wall. The wall is uneven and so is the gap!

That is probably exactly what has happened and would make sense, good shout.

Thank you, is the gap just soil at this stage and do weeds or grass try regrow? It looks like the gap is slightly lower than the grass area which I presume is intentional to have a gully effect.

Yes, the gap is soil, lower than the lawn and just wider than a hoe which I use to turn the soil over to keep weeds away (not many seem to like it there, they'd rather be in the well watered and well fed beds!)

Buy an edging tool. Works a bit like a spade but different. Has a lip on the top of the blade to guide it along the path and for an even depth cut.

Here's a short demo of how I trim the lawn along my borders. The sub-titles are in French. Tools I use:
                • a half-moon
                • long-handle shears
                • normal lawn shears
