I want to aereate my lawn and have bought the type that create a soil plug. What would be the best thing to place in each hole so the grass will grow better during the summer?

Agree with Jazid. If you want to aereate your lawn, why would you want to put anything in to the holes other than air?

I expect you were thinking along the lines of sand and top-dressing, SJ, since that's what you generally do when you use the tines of a fork, but there's no need if you're using a plug maker. As Jaz and HB say, the point of using it is to aerate the soil.

The local firm who does this sort of thing on a large scale recommends leaving the plugs lying around too, to break down naturally. Don't know the others agree on that one?

I suppose if you have a naturally heavy soil then spreading sand will aerate, otherwise clay will just gradually fill in the holes. Eventually you increase the proportion of sand in the top layer of the soil. Also increasing the proportion of sand will make it more resistant to compaction.
