    Hi

I am planning to grow vegetables in containers in a south facing garden which gets sun most of the day in the summer.

I was planning on tomatoes and sweet peppers - are these a good idea and what other veg herbs would do well in this location?

    many thanks

Hi and Welcome to the Forum

Those plants along with almost all other veg will delight in a sunny aspect, but you will need to keep on top of the watering in high summer.

Are you starting off the toms and peppers indoors from seeds or buying young plants ? they are rather tender plants so do not want to go outside until all frosts have gone and its generally a lot warmer.

So many other veg and herbs to try the list is endless, runner beans if you want to add some attractive height, lettuce like the cut and come again Salad Bowl , radish, spring onions, courgettes are other regular salads, not forgetting strawberries etc which are ready to plant out anytime.

They might sound simple plants but generally easy to grow with a good return.

When you say containers, what size are you talking about ? though as always bigger is better !

      Many thanks for your reply.

Mixture of containers but most pretty large. I work from home so watering in day not a problem.

Starting from seed which I'm currently doing. I really like the idea of staring right from the beginning rather than young plants.

Had good success last year with a tomato plant although less so with a courgette plant.

Looking to grow quite a lot this year for our own use and happy to go for simple plants maybe with one or two more ambitious thrown in.

Well I started the year with sunflowers, pumpkins, melons, beans, some spices and moonflowers

I'm pretty sure later on there will be more but for now this should suffice.
Radishes, Peas and others will be sown directly outside.

If you're including herbs, then rosemary, thyme and chives are pretty bomb-proof even if you forget to water them.

Do not under any circumstances introduce fennel or lemon balm into your garden though. They self-seed like weeds, worse than dandelions, and you'll never shift them. If you really do want them, keep them in a cloche so the bees can't get in and the seeds can't get out.
