Is there ever any respite from the joys of complaining?

Moaning about the drought was a good start; we could then follow with refrains re: relentless rain.

The soil under the lawn, a now overlong shaggy green carpet, is like sponge, despite excellent drainage; trying to run the mower over it would do untold damage; left until the Spring would make it impossible to mow.

Any thoughts ... other than “Get a lighter mower”?

Same here. I usually try and get my "last mow" of the year in during October. The grass seems to slow down a lot during October. That usually sees me through until the following spring when it starts growing again.

But this year, the last mow I did was September and a mixture of wet weather/ wet grass has made it impossible to mow.

It's getting quite long now, long enough to cause me issues trying to pick our dogs crap up! The mildish weather has meant the grass hasn't done it's usual slow down.

And I hate boggy wet longish grass.

Depending on how big your lawn is, would a strimmer do the job until it dries enough to take the mower over it.

Mowing until Christmas has become fairly normal, unless you just walk over it a lot to trample it down.

For some years now we haven't stopped mowing at all. The mowing is more infrequent but we still tend to do so once or twice a month in the winter. The mower is set on a higher setting but still removes some grass as it is actually growing more than it did in the four months of drought. I just have to be more careful at the end of each run not to just pivot the mower round to run the next line down the lawn. Instead of the pivot I have a large turning circle. :)

There are lots of worm casts here, mowing smudges them into mud slips.

We have very few worm casts at the moment and I think it's because the green woodpeckers have been hard at work on our lawns. We have loads of ant nests in the lawns as well and those are their favourites although there's one very large ant nest that they never seem to have a go at and that one has been there over fifty years

We have a friend who, depending on the weather, always mows his lawns on Christmas Day.
