I found some large bright red bugs climbing around my lilies. What are they likely to be and should they be dispensed with?

they are called lily beetles and they will decimate and eventually kill the lilies

catch and squash asap - they are canny little blighters and as soon as they are disturbed they will drop onto the soil and turn upside down so you cant see them so be ready

also you might see some brown yeuchy stuff on the leaves - these are eggs and yes they cover them in poo!

all these need removing and destroying

    good luck

Thats the ones. There were four on one plant, there is now eight halves on one plant. Is it worth spraying the plants with general bug killer?

Find one that specifies the Lily beetle Keve or you will be wasting your money..!!
I use Provado Ultimate bug killer as it is systemic & is thorough.. I would NOT use this on a food crop though obviously, just my lilies etc...

They will go for other members of the lily family. Your post has reminded me that i need to check my Fritillaries down the garden. Warm weather brings out the Japanese lily beetles and often I don't find them until the flowers are in tatters. They decimate the whole clump in a single day.
When catching lily beetles put a hand or something below first ,cause as soon as they detect your presence they fall off the plant. They are black underneath so you cannot find them when they hit the ground.
