I nicked a cutting last year, and planted it in my garden.:old:
This year, whatever it is has grown, and is now aprox 5ft tall.It also appears to be spreading.Although I'm not totally sure.
I think it might be a type of lillee,but..........
If anyone could help me out with an ID,and maybe a tip or two on basic care etc for it,then i'd be truely thankfull.

Hi Getafix. Have a Google under the name Hemerocallis.

They are a remarkably trouble free plant. They generally like sun and good drainage and slightly acid soil ( pH 6.0 ). I have three clumps in my garden. One clump in partial shade in wet clay. The book says they don't like this for fear of the roots rotting. But mine can't read - they love it. I have another clump in better drained soil - they love it. And a third clump in a big pot that covers a manhole cover. It gets little sun and is hardly ever watered - they love it.

They expand slowly, so are no trouble. If you want more you can dig them up and divide them (they are pretty tough and it a hard job). I never feed mine, though they are on clay which is full of nutrients.

That's a nice flower. It would go well in my scheme. I think I'll track down a supplier and get some. Anyone know how long it keeps its flowers for?

    Hi clueless,

I think the clue is in the name :hehe: - they last a day :rotfl: BUT the flowers keep coming :gnthb:

In that way they are like evening primrose and morning glory. The flowers only last a day but are replaced throughout their season by others coming out each day.

As Peter says, they don't need much looking after and are as tough as old boots :). After a few years you will be splitting them and giving them to friends. I don't give any away because I don't have any friends :hehe: :lollol:

I never released that Day Lillies got their name because the flowers only lasted a day. I assumed it was because like some flowers, the flowers are only open during daylight hours. Come to think of it I thought evening primroses closed their flowers during the day and reopened the same ones at night. I didn't release they were actually making new flowers every day. See, I told you I was the clueless one:)

Funny, I've just posted about Day Lilies elsewhere. I love them, have never grown them before but look forward to seeing them this year for the first time.

There seem to be hundred of varieties. Shiney, I'll be your friend and will happily take anything you wish to split!!

Mine flower for about 6 weeks. But apart from the flowers, the foliage is a nice variation as well.

A long time ago I did read on an American forum that there are one or two varieties that flower for a very long period - up to 26 weeks. But they weren't on offer in this country, and I have forgotten the name of them now.
