I'm confident of growing an onion over 2kgs but it's not enough to beat my uncle who regularly grows 2kg+ onions, 3kg is not unknown!

So I want you guys to try for a 3kg+ onion and lend it to me for bragging purposes!

Level playing field this year, we're both growing the "Kelsae" and "Mammoth" varieties, along with others.

I know he'd love to be beaten - NOT LOL

Hi Vince - Count me in!

Managed 2.1 kilos last year on virgin soil last year, and have got a few more varieties to play around with this year.

'Mammoth', 'Ailsa Craig', can't remember the others.

    Nick.

    I'm in.

I'm trying to beat my best of 6lb 10oz this year.

    I'm growing Ailsae.

I used to get 4-5 lb+ easily from Marshalls Showmaster sets but they've discontinued them.

I've got a section on my new site for this years attempt,so It'll probably end up being a disaster.

I've gone for broke this year and bought 50 seedlings for £30 !!...ouch.

And I've shelled out on a proper soil test for the 1st time, mind you It did show that I had depleted Potash and Phosphorous, so once I sort that out I might grow a whopper.

I had to "cheat" a bit by buying seedlings as I don't have a greenhouse and my polytunnel gets down to about -5 in Winter.

    Roll on Spring !!!

Well you being down south with your tropical climate evens up my "cheating seedling" thing then as you have a longer growing season than me up here in deepest darkest freezing Yorkshire. :D

Neck and neck at the moment, one of the Kelsaes seems to be doing rather well and slightly in front, not bad for "old" seed as opposed to fresh seed with the mammoths?

Well finally got 'em planted out in the bed.

They seem to be doing OK so far, about 15 inches tall with 4-5 leaves but a bit leggy due to the dull weather.click link for pics.
