    Hi,

If it is not a taboo subject, could I ask your opinion?

With reference to an allotment, or two to be more precise, but owned by separate people.
If you were unable to manage more than half of the allotment for â??your favouritesâ?, what in your opinion would be the best return per given area.

I mean which plants would you consider would give you the best return for the least upkeep? In particular the least amount of watering and weeding.

Can be edible of non edible, just the best returnâ?¦if you see what I mean!!!

    Cheers Steve

    Hi,
I got my allotment last year and faced the same dilemma. Yields were really good considering I could only go to the plot for a few hours at the weekend (at the most) - the clay soil meant I got away with minimal watering.
    Best effort/crop ratio:
Beetroot - sown direct and just thinned. Nearly 100% success rate
Onions - sets. Nearly 100% success rate
    Potatoes
Leeks - seeds planted in trays and then transplanted. Nearly 100% success rate
Courgettes - seeds planted in pots and then transplanted

    Hope that helps.

    P

i would say broad beans, onions, runner beans, courgette and spinach

they were best for me last year

but all lotties need watering and weeding regularly - onions hate weeds around them and courgettes needs lots of water

broad beans need very little attention but need an eye keeing for blackfly

i dont think there are any plant and then go back months later and pick veggies

why do you ask? have you got a nice long holiday booked somewhere exotic?
