Bin Storage

I'm in the process of tidying up my bin storage cupboard. I would like a way of propping up the cupboard lid.



I have looked at several different methods but I'm not sure which is the most suitable. I'm not sure how to measure the weight tolerance. I also have to bare in mind that my wife is considerably short than I with a shorter reach.

Any advice or experience you would like to share would be much appreciated.

That actually looks fairly heavy.
Not sure if you want to prop it open just sometimes or if you want something that kind of lifts it.
I'm thinking gas struts are a bit OTT, but then cant think of much else.

I've always had a hate of wheelie bins, mostly because they are only designed for emptying, and sod the poor b***ard who has to fill it.
How people with only one arm or hand get on with these things is a mystery.
I keep mine against a wall and you have to use two hands, one to lift and hold the lid and the other to put the rubbish in, the only other way it to keep the things about a foot away from the wall so the lid can flop back far enough to stay open on its own.

I've always thought a sliding section in the lid would be a good idea but obviously it would cost more to make the stupid things.

Anyway rant over and none of this helps you.

 

You don't want to move to our area then Pete, from October our recycling boxes and bag are going to be replaced with wheelie bins. We will still have the standard black and brown bins and now we get 2 more.



If its a hit, I will recommend them to the, mid Kent council...

 

Remember the old fashioned bonnet/hood closures? Maybe you could make one out of wood?

 

I've got three wheelie bins, one for recycle one for rubbish and one for garden rubbish.
Had them for years, that's how I know they are not user friendly.

 

We have four bins. Rubbish, garden waste and two recycling (we have a lot to recycle). I have mine hard up against the garden wall and open the lid towards me. Also makes for easier pulling out of a full bin.

A couple of the reviews suggest that it is a bit flimsy. I might see if I can pick one up locally and give it a try. Otherwise I agree with @Victoria. The whole thing will need stripping down and painting. That gives me plenty of time to tinker about with it.

I actually thought of a door closure too but then thought of the bonnet hood closure which is, as a weak wristed small person I would do.

 

The wind is a big factor here. Before I bought the cupboard, the bins used to blow all over the place.

That is why I have the rock on the small recycling bin.

@Jack Sparrow That mechanism is similar to what I had on the bonnet of an old car I owned.

 

We only have/ need two bins recyclables and general waste and a small crate for glass .Waste gets put out for collection about once a month and the others every 6-8 weeks. We don't have much waste to dispose.
They are tucked away out of sight in a sheltered spot alongside the car, so thankfully we don't have issues with them blowing over .
I think they are very unsightly things and can understand people wanting to disguise them especially it they are stored in full view.

 

Thank goodness we don't have such unsightly things here at your home.
In the country we have such at frequent locations ...

In towns they have underground units ...

 

Quite unsightly if you happen to live near them though.

During my earlier rant I did mention gas struts, I think they would work.

 

Too true. Fortunately most are not next to houses. Our two nearest is one next to an orange warehouse 1/2 km south and the other 1/2 km north near a bar from the end of our lane, but we have just a green bin (top right) at the end of our lane which is just household waste.

 

Most people over here keep them in their garage or they have a tall shed with hinged doors rather than a lid.
