    Hi all,

I'm thinking of building a bin store for the garden.
I've been looking in various garden centres for inspiration but all the flat pack ones have sloping roofs.

My idea is to have a planter as the roof of the store, put some strong smelling plants in it and it will look good as well as smell nice.

The thing that concerns me is drainage. Whilst I'm fairly competent with woodwork I'm a complete novice in the garden.

Anyone ever tried this, any ideas?

    Here's my intial thoughts...

Flat roof above the bins with a slight gradient towards the back for drainage.
Line the planter with pond liner and put holes in the back to allow the rain to escape.

Do I need a layer of rocks/stones/gravel in there before I add the soil?
How deep should it be. I guess that's going to depend on what I want to plant, but I'm thinking about as deep as a grow bag.

    Thanks for any advice,

    C.

    Hi C - welcome.

Now someone will be able to tell you exactly 'when', but I think it was in the last series of Gardener's World, Joe Swift built a cycle store (for 'cycle' read 'bin' in your case) on the same lines as you propose, with a 'green' roof. I've looked and - of course - that's no longer available on iPlayer. However, I have found this (hope the link works) which could be just what you're looking for.
