Hi all. Really not sure where this topic belongs so mods feel free to shift it if required :-)

As a 'get well' gift one of my friends has given me a kit to grow a fungus that glows in the dark. Basically the kit has a mason jar, hardwood shavings and the mushroom spawn. I just need to sterilise everything, add the spawn and wait. Apparently, the fungus mycelium glow faintly and Can be seen with the naked eye once dark adapted but the mushrooms themselves are much brighter.

Anyone ever seen these fungi or tried growing them? Thus really is an awesome gift. Hope I get some results!

Found some by accident twice, and on both occasions I was extremely drunk.

Once while trying to negotiate a bog in Devon in the dark, found a tree stump glowing with the stuff, and the second time in Snowdonia, on a black opps mission to liberate some peat in the middle of the night [IMG]

I wouldn't go baking your eyes. It could be quite painful.

I didn't realise the glowing fungi could be found in the UK. The fungus I've got is called Panellus stypticus but apparently the UK strain doesn't glow. I might see if I can inoculate a stump and grow it in the garden!

          Coolsox,

Innoculate your walls with the spore and you could save on electricity.
The damp may become a problem though.

In the second case, it was only the mycelium that was glowing.
