Seen in February / March last year, Manchester - defying identification from all the usual sources ever since. Thanks.

Yes, I was thinking that, but its the yellow fleck on the beak which puzzles me. The only sparrow I've found which has yellow on the beak is the American Tree Sparrow (Spizelloides arborea) but a. the yellow runs along the whole underside of their beak, and b. S. arborea doesn't visit England in any case!

          We need @strongylodon :)

I opened the door to find a yellow sparrow sitting there once, he hopped in, I gave him some food and water and he stayed.

Couldn't fly, but he used to hop up onto the seat of the armchair, then the arm, then the back, then he'd glide down to the floor.

Never had a cage, just used to hop around the house. Only ever said tweet.

Stayed with me for the rest of his life :)

Looks like it could be a Juvenile House Sparrow and the yellow could be what’s left of the gape which all fledglings have and it is the target area where the parents have to aim the food:biggrin:

PS,The yellow could also be a piece of seed (sweet corn/maize) that is often found in some bird seed mixtures and it hasn’t got the hang of the right seed to pick, but as the photo is a little bit out of focus it is quiet hard to tell:scratch:

Yes! I think you've clinched it - Google Images would seem to corroborate your suggestion of a juvenile house sparrow. Thanks!
