Woo, as far as I know treated timber is not a problem to birds.
I've handled tannalised timber for years, but I'm still around.
Not good at designing things though, so cant really help on that front.

I would advise whatever you do put a piece of formica or perspex o the top as I suppoose it will be a wooden table.
If you are putting fat/suetcake on it gets messy and they tell you to keep the top clean to prevent contamination and disease. It is much easier to wipe clean if it has an waterproof top.
I dont know why they dont sell them like this.

Hi Another idea is to put a little lean to shelf on the garage or hut side high up so cats cant get them. It save you walking on the lawn when its frosty.

Hi all, about your bird table Woo... i was interested to hear about the contamination thing. I was worried about that too but heard that as it's 'natural' there is no more contamination than in the 'wild'. I think it may have been about ponds but the same thing would apply i think.

Obviously you have to clean out now & then but too clean isn't natural. We have a 'metal' one but the birds soon knew what was on offer & we have even had magpies & doves on it & it's only little! It does get disgusting - but like i say, tip it out and start again.

Good luck with it Woo, you will love watching.

    Cheers

Ill post a picture of my one at home if I get a chance after work tomorow.

Imo the best feeders/ tables are simply a fine mesh gauze stapled to a light frame of 1"x1" and suspended from a branch.

This is a bit late for WOO's project, but we've now got a couple of 'tables' and I made then from the bases of plastic containers. One from an old black plastic bucket and the most recent one from a smaller plastic box. The big one clips over the top rail of a wooden fence and the one I made yesterday is screwed to the kitchen window sill. I drilled holes in both to allow water to drain.
I'll be posting some pics under the wildlife thread that show the most recent 'table'.
