    Hi

Has anyone grown this and what do you think of it?

I'm very tempted to buy one but not sure as to where to plant it.

I have it in three areas of my garden. The mother plant which I bought about 5 years ago was originaly as a wind break by my stable, but my horse heavily pruned it. I divided it up and have three pieces in a hedge which I planted last year, and one at the bottom of the garden.

Its not as tall as my other bamboo (prpbably due to what my horse did), but it is real quality, the wind blows at it and it still looks great AND it is a clump forming bamboo so does not become invasive like others.

can be expensive to start with, shop around, but don't compromise by not starting with a good well established plant.

I've been looking at ones in a 9cm pot, is that too small?

I hadn't thought much about bamboo before for my garden - I tend to see the thin weedy-lookig stuff that some people have and leave well alone, but this looks amazing! I am wondering if I can find some room for something like this now.. I assume it is fully hardy?

    Thanks for the heads-up! :D

this is one of the balck bamboos I have planted in my screan - not yet a year old so young low canes are green desceptively the short canes are black but only because horse ate them. I have two other bamboos next to it of different variety and then another 2 black ones at the other end.

teh middle bamboos are a little disapointing in winter, but elegant in summer however if I had my time again - and I may yet do it, I would have chosen Aurea - a lovely yellow to contrast.

As to hardiness, you could not get a damper frost pocket with westerly winds hard at them all winter.

I like it Waco - I like the addition of the the small grasses as well! How much do you think the well established plants that you talk about would cost?

Depends where you buy them. My starter plant cost about £28 about 4 years ago, but at the time I saw them advertised for £68 similar size. Prices differ round the country. Not sure I would risk male oreder a good sized plant would cost too much to send.

May be someone near to you could give you price ranges.

So the advise seems to be to go for a well established specimen?

I've seen some on ebay as well as the Thompson and Morgan catalogue, it is them that are selling for £7.99 in 9cm pots and three for £19.98.

    Haven't looked local yet though.

    Regards Stingo

I saw an offer for them - you wil have a LONG time to wait to get them up to size, they are quite slow.
If your garden is not so big you may prefer this.

    Yours is gorgeous Waco.
My garden is pretty small so I'm beginning to think it may not be a good idea, although I could keep it in check.
