My black currant plants haven't put any shoots or blossom on yet. I reckon they're either dead or late this year because of the cold spring...has anyone else got similar issue with black currants this year?

Up here in the very far North, our blackcurrant bushes are coming into leaf just now. Our garden gets very windswept but they seem to have survived another year! Be patient with yours! ;)

Mine have got little flowers on, I think some leaf should be showing by now. Break off a tip and if it is brittle and brown it's dead! Carry on down the stem. If you come to green then wait a bit longer!

Hi everybody...my first post here ...

I planted a blackcurrant back in March which appears to be going great guns - lots of leaves and pink flowers....however can anyone tell me when and if it I should protect it from birds and the best way of protecting it?

    Thanks for any help.

We've grown black & red currants for years and have never found birds a problem. We do get caterpillars on the red currants but vigilance and early spraying zaps them.

If you do find birds eating them your best bet would be fine netting (inexpensive) draped over the bush.

Hi, mine are in leaf and flower but they are an early variety. Scratch the stem half way along it, if it's green, the bush is late coming to life, if it's brown the bush is dead.
