Rant: Just received a "Cottage Garden" catalogue from Thompson and Morgan. Nothing "cottagey" about it as it is full of garish flowers and awful black ones. They are pushing black roses, hyacinths, fuchsias, delphiniums, bamboo and even black primroses   Why would anyone want these freakshow things? Does anyone buy them? I suppose they must otherwise the loony plant breeders wouldn't waste time and money on them. I bet the photos are digitaly enhanced too and so instead of a jet black flower you actualy get a muddy brown - serves 'em right! T&M used to be my main supplier of seed when I had an allotment - their latest catalogue went straight in the bin [IMG]

It's about like the blue roses that are lavender coloured and the pink daffodils which were so kind of insipid ???? I did buy both of these many years ago but was disappointed. :(

Moody borders. Blame Piet Oudolf. Or enjoy them if it turns yer dial. Me? I don't care. Colourists are just a clique. Love his textures though

Mmmmm - me I don't worry about the hybridizers, they gave and give us some wonderful plants. I would hate to be back before modern sweet peas, dahlias, cosmos, sweet william and of course roses.

Whilst my taste does not extend to so called "black" flowers, - I can see how in the right setting things like black tulips (which are a very dark purple) could look wonderful.

I really like the Blue Moon HT rose myself, albeit prone to disease and not blue at all but rather lilac/purpleish. And that chocolate Cosmos kinda tickled my fancy when it appeared on the market. Sorry if this causes anybody any offence...

    Kind regards
    Roy

Why would it cause offence, Roy?

Seems to me Hornbeam that its really easy to cause offence so I am protecting myself from the potential fall-out, if you like. Maybe not the correct choice of words...

    Kind regards

I have some black sweet williams that I might give a try next year, thought I'd plant them by my lime green spirea for a good contrast (?) If it doesn't look good I'll just try some other combo - it all adds to the fun! [IMG]

I have some black violas in seed form that I am going to try next year, they might look nice amongst the bright pinks of my annuals.

Royster if you like blue moon there is a rose called rhapsody in blue a floribunda so very floriferous a truly beautiful rose.Hornbeam as for black flowers everybody to their own it would be boring if every body thought and did the same, variety is the spice of life, try the unusual black bat flower (Tacca Chantrieri)

Whilst I'm not really a black flower person, mostly because they are not really blacck, I did have some black violas last year. They were a beautiful shade and flowered profusely, I thik that they self set but I can't be sure as we lweft them behind when we moved and the memories going a bit!

Whilst generally agreeing, I would love to see a black bat plant. Plenty of pictures, but never the real thing.
